Social research project to commence in Port Stephens

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has engaged the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) and the new Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC to conduct research focusing on people’s preparation, decision making and actions during the October fires.

The research work will commence in Port Stephens on Tuesday 3 December with interviews being conducted over three days. The same research program will commence in the Blue Mountains on Tuesday 10 December and then in the Southern Highlands on Wednesday 11 December 2013.

Similar studies were completed in Coonabarabran, Yass and the Shoalhaven after fires in January 2013.

The Community Engagement Team is working with the CRC to promote the research project and provide every opportunity for interested and affected residents to participate.

Many of you would have family and friends who have been impacted by these fires. If appropriate, you may wish to alert them to this research project. Residents can express an interest in being interviewed. For those interested in participating, interviews can be ‘booked’ by contacting the CRC on 0419 550 409 or by email at office@bushfirecrc.com.

An online survey will be available from next week – the survey link will be shared shortly.

A Media Release has been issued by the NSW RFS on the Research Project, and a resident flyer has been created by the CRC.

Visit the NSW RFS website to view reports from the research conducted on the January 2013 fires.
