A bush fire themed snakes and ladders game

To help educate children on bush fire awareness Peter Farry, Secretary of the Lavington Brigade, developed a fun and interactive community engagement tool – a bush fire themed game of snakes and ladders.
In his seventies, Peter has long been interested in bush fire education – particularly for children – and the ability for young people to share safety messages with adults at home.

To bring the concept to life, Peter worked with Julie Bartlett from the Southern Border Team, ensuring key messages from the Bush Fire Survival Plan were included. The project took four months to complete.

The game is printed on thick paper and is packaged with dice and counters so the children can play the game with their family. Additionally, a giant game and dice was created for groups of children to interact with.

Julie has been taking the giant version with her as part of her school visit program and the feedback on both versions of the game has been fantastic.

As shown below, children enjoy playing the game and discussing each of the bush fire messages on the squares as they play.
