2013 Open Day photo competition
NSW RFS Open Day was a big hit this year with over 350 brigades participating and that resulted in some fantastic entries for the Open Day photo competition.
As Open Day is a great way to show the community firsthand what we do, that also makes it the perfect opportunity for those with a camera to capture images of NSW RFS members engaging with their local community.
This year we received over 130 entries and the quality of images are really impressive.
After much deliberation, the Community Engagement team selected the three images below - their photographers will receive Bunnings vouchers.
First prize: Brett Atkins taken at Menangle Park in Macarthur
"Photo taken at the Menangle Park RFS Open Day, held at the Glen Alpine Shopping Centre car park. Menangle Park members gave educational talks on preparing your home and allowed members to use some of the equipment and hoses on their Cat 1 tanker. It was a great opportunity to meet with the local community and show them what the NSW RFS is all about and also advise them on how to prepare themselves for the upcoming fire season."
Second prize: Michael Cook taken at Woronora in Sutherland
"These were children of parents who attended our station and got a bit of a feel for the equipment we use. It was a great day."
Third prize: Mellony Burke taken at Byron Bay in the Far North Coast
"This year’s Open Day saw 450 people come through the station, this was assisted with an organised all street garage sale where the station is located. The brigade provided a sausage sizzle, drinks and ice blocks. Our station is located in the Gaggin Memorial Park and there is a children’s playground at the rear of the station. We continually get targeted with graffiti – this year members from the brigade cleaned up the graffiti from the children playground so we decided to have a fun mural painted on the back of our station. This was painted by a local mother and so that the children can relate to the mural, it was taken from our children activity book, the smiley fire truck, the fireman inside (renamed Fireman Gregg) and the poster Clean Up Your Rubbish with the emus and koalas. The mural has been a big hit. All the children were local kids who love their Rural Fire Brigade in Byron Bay."
