Community Liaison in action

Hi All,
I just received this footage from Scott Jones that he and Cathie Moore put together following the 2007 Section 44 fire at Mount Kuring-gai. They called this footage 'Community Liaison in action.'

The footage shows the importance of having your property prepared and the impact a bush fire can have on a community. It also shows the dedication and skill of NSW RFS members and the importance of inter agency teamwork.

A message from Scott Jones
I should also mention a bit more about the overall project.

This footage was the opening for the "Community Liaison in Action" presentation at the 2008 Com Ed conference at Newcastle.

The presentation gave an overview of how we utilised the Public Liaison Unit (PLU) during the S44, and the holistic approach that the local brigade (Mt Kuring-gai) took to the incident & beyond.

We had a manned PLU set up during the S44, to ensure up to date messages were getting out to the public.

We conducted Firewise Alert Meetings for the first 3 days of the incident.

We set up Public Information stands within the Ku-Ring-Gai national park.
Post fire, a number of activities were arranged:
* A series of "Fire Walks" helped brief the community about the facts of the fire, and they witnessed first hand the immediate response to fire by the flora & fauna.
* Our brigade targetted the bushfire affected areas as part of the Clean Up Australia Day program.
* We also arranged a Community AAR - "Out of the Ashes" - where the entire local community were invited to a BBQ, DVD presentation & Photo Display from the fires. We also conducted a Community Survey to gain valuable feedback about the communities response to the fire.

And before I get rocks thrown at me...I better acknowledge the help that Theo & Huw gave putting the video footage together !

Cheers....Scott J

Another quick note from Scott
"Another quick point...

As part of the invitation to the community for the "Out of the Ashes" BBQ & presentation, we invited local residents to give us a copy of any photo's or video footage that they may have taken during the fire.

We received over 1200 photo's and some video footage !!

It is often great to look at things through somebody elses lense....
